FROM ICE TO STORMS

Good afternoon! Hope everyone has remained safe throughout this icy weather last night. I am actually very pleased with how it turned out, as my snow/ice map was actually not too bad off! Roads are improving, but isolated areas are still dealing with slick roads, so take it slow and you should make it to your destination fine.

If that isn't enough, a severe weather outbreak is looking likely tomorrow evening and overnight for Indiana, and southwestern Indiana may be upgraded to a moderate risk. This could be a very serious situation to unfold! I know, this will be happening just 36-48 hours after the ice storm, but wild is the new normal in the weather department! :)



I don't mean to scare anyone, considering the last outbreak produced 9 tornadoes back on Tuesday. Please stay tuned for the latest on this potential severe outbreak. Much of the day tomorrow will be windy and overcast, with temps surging in the upper 40s-mid 50's by late Sunday night! The best chance for severe storms looks to be in the 9pm-2am period Sunday night into Monday morning.

Snow Outlook: Even though the pattern will be relatively mild and wet next week, late next week into next weekend looks VERY interesting for snow-lovers out there! All I can say at this point, there will be a decent snow SOMEWHERE in the Ohio Valley, with a cut-off low. Can't go into any more details. :) This doesn't mean it will snow, so don't get excited yet. If I see a threat coming, I will still talk about it anyway.

ICE STORM CONDITIONS

Good evening, again! :) DANGEROUS conditions quickly developing out there. Do not travel tonight. Simply put. The freezing rain is much heavier than I expected. This means slightly higher ice accumulations are looking possible, especially from Vincennes-Bedford-Seymour line and northward. Hearing numerous sirens out there. Not a good sign at all. Almost a standstill now on Highway 67 in Morgan County. My neighbor who just got back from the icy roads said that it's almost impossible to stop at the stop signs without sliding. Stay home tonight, and let's hope this stuff moves out before any power outages. Here is a picture of the ice covered sidewalk outside my house:

ICE UPDATE

Good evening! A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the entire state, with portions of eastern Indiana under a Winter Storm Warning. This is not because of snow, but sleet and freezing rain. Here is the latest outline of watches/warnings:



Also, the SPC has also issued a statement that the freezing rain is starting to increase across the area:



Don't forget about the radars and webcam tabs at the top of the page! Those are great tools to check out the latest conditions/road conditions across the state. WINTER WEATHER UPDATE

2PM Update: Good afternoon. Heavy snow and sleet is now falling just NORTH and EAST of Indy, but this activity won't reach Indy. If you are headed north of Indy this afternoon, be aware of snow/sleet covered roads, and low visibility. More activity will develop to our south by the evening. I will have several updates on the blog and on facebook to keep you safe.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY

Good morning! A wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and light snow are all in the forecast beginning later today! The advisory kicks in at 4 this afternoon, and goes through 5am Saturday. The latest trends show the icing making it farther south now, through much of southern Indiana as well.

ARCTIC AIR - ICE - 60 DEGREES - SEVERE STORMS! ALL IN THREE DAYS! DAYS! G

Good evening! As expected, a streak of snow moved through the state today. Amounts ranged from absolutely nothing here south of I70, to 2-4" of snowfall today from Lafayette, Kokomo, to Muncie. (The picture to the right was taken in north-central Indiana, where a few inches accumulated today.



Cold Night Ahead


Now it's all about the COLD night ahead. It is 15 degrees in Indy, and 2 degrees in Chicago. Wind chills are way below zero. Be sure to get the pets indoors tonight! Lows will range from 4-8 degrees where snow fell today, with areas that didn't get snow today in the lower teens. "Feel-like" temps will be even colder! Bundle up in the layers!


Wintry Mix Tomorrow Night


It still looks like we will have to watch out for a light mixture of ice/sleet/snow tomorrow night. Here is a breakdown from north to south:



One thing that continues to make the forecast tough, is that the precipitation will be scattered, so some areas across central or southern Indiana may get hardly any precipitation, while other areas get over 1/10" of icing. It is the areas to the north that will be the worst areas to travel tomorrow night. Still be aware for the potential for a glaze of ice making things very slick tomorrow evening, mainly from 7pm-1am.

Spring-Like Temps - Severe Storms Sunday night-Monday?


Thinking is increasing on a RAPID warm-up Sunday! The latest trends show temps going WELL into the 50's OVERNIGHT Sunday night - into Monday morning! That is just 36 hours after the ice potential tomorrow night! One crazy pattern we are in! It looks strong storms will develop in a VERY unstable atmosphere early Monday. Temps should fall again late Monday, with cooler air Tuesday.
