Good afternoon blog. It is a nice day outside with temps expected to reach the low 50s. Showers move in tonight and become heavy tomorrow with a storm or two possible with highs soaring in the mid-upper 50s! Heavy rain continues Friday night through noon Saturday. A Flood Watch has been issued by the NWS for the heavy rain on top of already high river levels.
What is dirty rain???????
If it had a red tint to it, it was most likely from the dust/dirt that originated in the central Plains States (i.e. OK, KS etc…). Many reports of blowing dust were received out across this area when this big storm system was moving through. We believe one of two this happened here. The updrafts (rapidly rising air currents) that gave birth to the thunderstorms carried this dust high into the atmosphere and up to jet stream level. As the storms continued east into our region that dust was being washed out of the atmosphere by the heavy rainfall that accompanied the storms.
Another possible reason could have been the tornadoes that accompanied yesterday morning’s storms. It appears one very intense thunderstorm (embedded within the long line of storms that moved across all of area) was responsible for much of the damage that occurred. This embedded storm was what we call a supercell as it was long lived and produced a combination of straight-line wind damage and occasional tornadoes all along its path. That path was basically along and north I-64. As most of you already know, a tornado is an intense rotating and rising column of air and forms in regions where there are both rapidly rising and descending air currents that are very close to one another. It’s very possible that the tornadoes that occasionally formed with this one supercell actually sucked up dirt and threw it high into the atmosphere – only to be washed out by the falling rain… hence “mud-rain”
I think that is crazy!!!!!! That was a car left sitting in Louisville while it was raining! I think that is a sign of the times! Have an awesome afternoon, and thanks for looking at the blog!
